Top 5 Countries for Roadtrips with kids
Updated: Apr 15
Road trips are a great way to really get to know a country. But is this way of traveling also suitable when you travel with children? Of course! Although it is not obvious everywhere, children who have to sit still for too long in a car can become little monsters and the activities must also be more child-friendly or you need a holiday when you return home!
For us, the key to a successful road trip with children is slow travel. No ticking off lists, wanting to visit as many places as possible or bridging huge distances. Do you enjoy the experience with the whole family, but do you only get halfway through your program? No problem, then the other half will be for next time. Your kids will feel the relaxed atmosphere and will be much calmer themselves!
These are our favorite road trip destinations:
The perfect country to explore with an RV: beautiful nature, no hassle with tropical diseases (although a mosquito repellant is needed!) and a child-friendly atmosphere. Hiking trails for children and museums that are also interesting for the little ones, you will feel completely welcome here! Even if there was no house to be seen in the area, we came across playgrounds everywhere!
There is so much to see and do in the US that you can plan a trip tailored to your children. Are they in a Disney-land phase, do they prefer to play on the beach or do they like going for a walk in nature (the beautiful rivers, waterfalls and wildlife are never boring!), there really is something for everyone here! The only downside in our opinion: this is not a cheap destination!
A dream destination, a country that never disappoints! Seeing the power of nature is fascinating for young and old. Distances are limited, what makes Iceland perefect for slow travel. Activities are here for every age: whale watching, beautiful walks along spectacular waterfalls, glacier caves, swimming in hot springs, enjoying cozy Reykjavik, or a boat trip between the ice on a glacial lagoon,... The only negative aspect we can think of: Iceland is expensive...
This country surprises in so many ways and is unique in terms of nature and culture, but above all: it is a perfect destination for families. Although I would like to add that I would not visit this country with toddlers. I especially loved seeing the enthusiastic reactions of my children in the game parks, taking nice walks and enjoying a terrace or visiting a wine farm. But there are certainly sufficient facilities for the little ones!
We found Sweden perfect as a road trip country. No disadvantage to be found... Child-friendly, locals welcomed us with open arms, beautiful nature, many activities possible and they do not have to be expensive at all!
... and what about the countries we didn't like?
I like to focus on the positive, and experiences are very individual, so listing 'don't's' doesn't feel right. Countries that we didn't like were mainly too busy. For example, Croatia is beautiful, but during the summer months it is quite a challenge to enjoy all the beauty in peace! Indonesia was for us a bit more difficult to travel with children. And we like France, but the traffic jams during summer are horrible! We also found Costa Rica, Morocco and Australia to be perfect road trip countries, we did these trips without the kids, which is why they do not get a place in this list.
