Volunteering in Namibia: a different way of traveling
There are things you want to do at least once in your life, or rather 'must do at least once'. Volunteering is definitely on that list for me. And preferably in a part of the world where you can really make a difference. My eye caught volunteering at a wildlife sanctuary in Namibia. A destination that has been on my wishlist for a long time and a subject that I am truly passionate about. Somewhere at the bottom of a drawer, I still have a master's degree in Biology that I never did anything with. But the love for nature has always been there. So, I didn't to think about this for a long time. I just booked my ticket and that was that! Namibia is not a cheap destination, but I managed to find good tickets. You read more about how to do this here.
Wildlife in Namibia has been under pressure for a long time. On one hand, there is the rising tourism industry, and on the other hand, there are the farms where lions and cheetahs pose a significant threat to livestock and are therefore often shot by farmers. Additionally, poachers are also a problem in the country.
My eye was drawn to the N/a'an ku sê Foundation. They have projects range from conserving Namibia’s incredible wildlife and landscapes to herculean humanitarian efforts. These are all supported by unique ecotourism experiences and superb filming and photographic opportunities. This doesn't sound bad, does it?! On paper, it already looked very promising. And I am, of course, extremely curious to see if this experience will meet my expectations!
